Toxemia and Health
When I was about 14 years of age I began to study health and fitness. I read books on anatomy, nutrition, physical fitness, physiology, and general well-being. One book that really stood out for me was “Toxemia, The Basic Cause Of Disease” written by Dr. J.H.Tilden, in which he describes all disease as a crisis of toxemia. Intuitively it felt right and made complete sense to me, and so Tildens findings became the basis of my orientation to health and well-being.
“Dr. Tilden began to question the philosophy that the use of medicine was the only real cure for disease. His extensive reading, especially of medical studies from European medical schools, and his own observations, led him to the conclusion that we build disease from within. His thoughts on toxemia began to formulate and materially develop. Using no medicines he practiced his theory of clearing the body of toxic poison and then allowing nature to make the cure. He taught his patients how to live so as to not create a toxic condition and to retain a healthy body free of disease.”
For most of my life since, I monitored my own health and observed the results of my eating habits and very quickly saw the evidence of what Tilden had discovered in his own research and practice. Whenever I had any kind of ailment I could readily relate it to my own eating habits and indulgences. Later I also observed and became sensitive to the effects of emotional stress, physical stress, and mental anxiety, as well as lifestyle and personal attitude in general, all which can create toxins and enervation in the body, thereby slowing down or halting the natural and continuous detoxification process and resulting in toxin build up. In more modern times there are also more and more environmental influences that can cause toxemia (poisoning) in our bodies, such as airborne pollutants and electro-magnetic fields.
I never took any medication (except in very rare ’emergencies’), but all ailments passed in a short time while I made personal adjustments in my diet or simply ate less (including sometimes fasting), drank plenty of good water, and allowed the detox process to take its course.
It became very apparent to me that most symptoms that we call “diseases” are not caused by something outside of us, but that they are a result of our own depleting and overstimulating and stressful habits. This was both confronting (I couldn’t blame some scapegoat for my ills) and relieving (it meant that I had the power [and responsibility] to help the body heal itself and maintain health). The body is self-regulating and self healing as long as we live a life that supports it rather than one that undermines it.
We should welcome toxemic crises such as the common cold and flu as they are the natural and essential cleansing/healing crisis of the self-regulating and rebalancing process of the body’s ‘immune system’ (I prefer to call it the defence and healing system).
One cannot ‘treat’ disease unless the cause is known. Treating the symptoms does not remove the cause. Most diseases are a symptom of an underlying toxic condition causing imbalance, both in body and mind. Our body is constantly challenged by impurities that we ingest with our food intake, our indulgences, toxins created by stressful environments, negative thought patterns, fear, sorrow and anger, and all kinds of habits that can stress our organs and undermine our health in the long run, if not the short term. If our detox and healing system cannot keep up with the production of toxins, the body’s detoxification functions slow down or even cease, creating a rapid build up of toxins. When this build-up reaches a tolerance limit, it initiates a toxemic crisis, making it a priority to get rid of (eliminate) the build up of waste and toxins as quickly as possible. That is exactly what the common cold or flu is.
There are other crises of detoxification and elimination, such as skin rashes, fever, diarrhoea, sweating etc. Unfortunately a common practice is to try stopping this detox process by taking medical suppressants thereby not only adding to the toxic condition but also leading to a more intense crisis later on, or creating chronic long term conditions (cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.)
I believe there is no such thing as ‘immunity’. If we ingest poisons that threaten our organs our body suffers and has to fight for survival. As well, we are constantly subjected to all kinds of influences from our environment and from our minds and thinking patterns which create stress and toxins in our body. It very much depends on our body’s constitution and state of health as to whether or not it can deal with those stresses. The healthier and happier we keep our body and lifestyle the more readily our bodies can deal with environmental influences and other stresses, and even adapt to changes we cannot control. One thing we should keep in mind is that our bodies are mortal, Even the ‘perfect’ diet and health practices cannot prevent that, nor can medical science prevent it. Eventually the body will break down and die. So we should also be prepared for that event.
A good principle to follow is to eat what is easily assimilated and easily eliminated, and do what we can to minimize stress and anxiety
